Providers submitting electronic claims be required to obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.

This is a 10-digit number that will replace your Medicaid and other health plan identification numbers and PIN numbers. The ostensible purpose of the number is to simplify and consolidate all manner of Medicare and Medicaid provider identification numbers.

The transition to the NPI commences in October, 2006. Logik Solutions is ready before your Fiscal Intermediary, but that’s the norm. Don’t start using the NPI until your Fiscal Intermediary tells you they’re ready to accept the NPI, but, like Logik Solutions, be ready. NPI enrollment started in May, 2005. Our physician tables, and electronic 837 files are ready and waiting whenever your payers are.

Only the PROVIDER of services may apply for the NPI. To obtain your NPI number(s) and for optimal security, don’t ever give out your existing PIN or other provider identification numbers over the phone. Go right to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov
